Asking Better Questions

If listening to lateral-thinking podcasts has taught me anything, it’s that riddles are solved not by wracking your brain for answers but by changing up the line of questioning.

Many of the puzzles we deal with as parents and caregivers regarding our children’s behaviors can be solved - or at least made less mysterious - when we learn to ask better questions. Questions like, “What are you doin?” or “Why did you do that?” often get us nowhere because the person acting out of a Hunger for Connection isn’t likely to be able to offer a helpful response. However, using the language of hunger can help them - and us - to access a different part of our brains in order to bring about better understanding.

Today, we turn the 4 D’s of the Hunger for Connection into a series of simple prompts that you can use with your child (AND with yourself) to dig deeper and find out what’s really going on behind the scenes. Try them some time soon, and be sure to leave a comment or review letting me know how the conversation went!
